Inside the Frame: June 16
Trip to NYC. Feminist Art. Many new exhibitions featuring my work including FAM and a gallery in Sacramento!
Happy Monday!
I’m currently on the train back from a weekend in New York, sipping a mimosa and writing this newsletter as I pass through the Bronx. New York is a place I love to visit, filled with numerous museums and creative experiences. I was here celebrating my grandmother’s 89th birthday (don’t tell her I told you all that) and had the opportunity to visit the Brooklyn Museum for the first time and eat/drink at some wonderful restaurants. Even with the rain, we made the most of it and enjoyed some walks around the city. Now it’s back to reality.

What’s been going on…
I took myself on another Artist Date as I finish out week two of The Artist Way. If you’ve been following me on TikTok, you may have seen some of my updates from week one. For my second Artist Date, I went to the Brooklyn Museum and enjoyed some wonderful exhibits. Most notably, I was able to see the Dinner Party exhibit by Judy Chicago. It is a 1979 feminist installation that celebrates the achievements of 1038 women through an elaborate triangular banquet table. At this table are 39 place settings for notable historical and mythical women, such as Georgia O’Keeffe, Susan B. Anthony, Sojourner Truth, and Theodora. It included porcelain plates with vulvar or butterfly motifs. This exhibit was very controversial for its time due to its emphasis on women (not surprised). More recently, it has recieved some criticism for its whiteness, which is justified. I think as this show continues, I wonder if she would be willing to adjust/alter the names at the table to include more influential BIPOC and Queer/Trans women. Or maybe we can see another artist take this challenge.

Art Book of the Week
Carrie Mae Weems: A Great Turn in the Possible
I think I’m back to the weekly artist books. Or maybe for this week (haha). Mostly because while I was at the Brooklyn Art Museum shop, I found this publication featuring an amazing survey of work by Carrie Mae Weems! Filled with some of my favorite projects, including Kitchen Table Series and From Here I Saw What Happened and I Cried. Very excited to have this in my photobook collection! You can grab this book here if you’re interested.
