Inside the Frame: February 17
My first love, exciting events to attend and exhibits to go see! Plus, join me for drinks and visit my shared studio!
Happy Monday! :)
After a long weekend of love (my partner and I celebrated 3 years together!), I wanted to think back to my first love. Photography.
I first fell in love with photography when my dad would show us the mountain of National Geographic magazines that he collected since his twenties. These magazines inspired him to travel to some pretty amazing places such as Madagascar, Peru, and Bolivia. Carrying his film camera around, he would photograph any and everything that caught his eye. When I was in middle school, he gifted me my first film camera. I would go on walks around my house, trying to find interesting things to photograph. Sometimes, my friends would join, and I’d photograph them. But it wasn’t until I went into high school and took my first darkroom class that I knew I wanted to follow this passion completely. This led me to convince my parents that I had to go to art school. Which is how I ended up at Massachusetts College of Art and Design studying photography.
Those four years truly shaped how I looked at images and sculpted a lot of what my style is today. Inspired by Justine Kurland, I dedicated myself to a camera unlike any other I’ve seen...a large format view camera. Since then, I’ve explored other mediums and formats, but I always end up back to this camera and its way of seeing the world. It’s beautiful to reflect on my journey as a photographer. I’m excited to continue to pursue this passion and hopefully inspire others! ~ Caterina
What’s been going on…
Naming your business is a hard task. As I work on rebranding Art Noir PVD, I have also been trying to come up with a new name. I’ve been pondering over a long list, and I would love to get some input!
Outside of that, I recently worked on a campaign with emerging streetwear brand PHASE. Check out some selects from the campaign below! You can see more on my website here.

Art Book of the Week
I wanted to start a new part of this newsletter that showcases an art book that has inspired me or that I found interesting! And to start this trend, I am picking…
How to Read Portraits published by The Met
This book is the first in a long time where I could sit down and read it all in one sitting. No really…I spent 3+ hours at RiffRaff, jazz music playing in the headphones, reading this book. It goes from talking about how identity is shown through portraiture to using objects as portraits. As a photographer who mostly photographs people, it was an inspiration to read and explore how I can create portraits in very abstract and intentional ways. It also showcases some of the best portraits of our time and connects them in interesting ways to portraits of the past. Hope you enjoy it!
